DIY Flower Ice Cubes with IZZE.

Spring is in full swing with sunshine, warmer weather and flowers galore. My new apartment has an amazing backyard which means I’ve been brainstorming new entertaining ideas to have friends over to enjoy the space. As a flower junkie, I’m always finding myself picking up fresh blooms and also looking for new ways to use them, and decided to try a little DIY that’s perfect for entertaining season.

Inspired by the bold flavors and bright colors of IZZE’s Sparkling Water, made my weekly trip to San Francisco’s wholesale Flower Mart (if you haven’t been, it’s a must!) to pick up some bright blooms to garnish a glass of my favorite sparkling drink. DIY flower ice cubes are a fun and functional way to add a little spring flair to your next get together and look so pretty when served with a clear drink (like IZZE!) or a cocktail.

When shopping around for flowers, I looked for blooms that were organically grown and pesticide free, with flowers small enough to fit in my ice cube trays. When making ice cubes for entertaining, I always prefer the square silicone ice cube trays for a really uniform look – the large sized ice cubes look great when served in a rocks cocktail class with a single cube or do a great job chilling beverages in an ice bucket, while the smaller ice cubes fit within your typical glass and stack nicely on top of each other.

To start, prep your flowers with a good rinse and then clip off the blooms from the stems and set aside. Grab your ice cube trays and fill with water, using distilled water for perfectly clear cubes or just good old tap water if you don’t mind a little cloudiness. Place several flowers in each section of the ice cube tray and freeze (note: the flowers may float so you might want to fill the trays 2/3 of the way full, freeze for a few hours and then top with some more water to have the flowers in the middle).

And that’s it! A simple springy way to add some color to your next brunch or backyard soiree.

How have you been adding a little spring to your everyday? Anyone else can’t get enough flowers right now?
